Watch The Birdie – Blackpool Mural

p1180441 p1180442

These images are from a project I did in South Shore, Blackpool, very close to where I used to live as a kid. The place used to be a joke shop and had been boarded up for years. The locals (hotel owners mostly) got tired of looking at the eyesore and so I was approached by their representative to spray paint something over it. They all pulled together to pay for the paints and my fee.

I was given free reign to do whatever I wanted, anything was going to be better than how it looked! I asked Jay Sharples if he wanted to collab on one of the boards (it was a strange surface, think it was chipboard, but the spray paint went on fine) – which he did. Image one, the left hand board, Jay did from the bottom right side diagonally up to the top left in his masking tape and splatter technique. I just made it up as I went along! Abstract shapes.

The second image I did on my own, which I call ‘Watch The Birdie’.  Again I made it up as I went along, but as I did, a bird emerged when i saw the red ‘beak’ so I gave it an eye and turned it into a kind of abstract bird image.
